ah yes, dead week. the one week that describes how I feel inside.

I tweeted this a few days ago because it's literally how I feel about the week before finals. I've been hyped up on final presentations. I've had to prep for four presentations within the last week. I'm honestly just so drained and ready to sleep for the next two years.

Although, I was so stoked about my music history presentation. I completely went nerd mode and talked about Barbershop Harmony and how women broke the all male barrier. If you wanna see what I mean, click here for my presentation (lol). It's actually a pretty cool topic and I was really excited to talk about it.

But there was one presentation that a kid in my class gave that caught my attention.

"Music is constantly changing, but always stay true to your roots."

A thing I noticed about some artists and bands nowadays is that they're constantly changing their sound whether it be because they just want to change their sound or because they want to maintain relevance. That's one of the main points the kid in my class was trying to make. And that's been bugging me quite a bit lately. So many artists I've loved have recently released new music and it sounds nothing like their normal stuff. And that makes me so freaking sad. Why change the sound of your music when you already have a fanbase for that music?

Now don't get me wrong, I understand most artists change their sound because they want to experiment with a new sound. But some artists literally gravitate towards pop music because it's popular! They sell out and completely change everything they started making music for.

A lesson we should all learn as musicians: Make music to make music. Do it because you want to share something with the world - whether it be a story or a simple melody, always stay true to your roots.

later days xx
